iCloud sync

Where are the sync files on my iCloud Drive? The sync function is confusing to me. I have lost updates several times and feel I need to understand what the program is doing. Yesterday I added a bunch of critter photos, turned on sync and lost all of the changes. I already understand how to find the folders that are local to my computer and iPad.
