Since the latest update when I now go to print my dives the PDF creates two pages with the notes on the second page I don't really want to print two pages for each dive. Is there a way of modifying the export to pdf to keep it to just one side of A4

You can disable the notes page in Preferences -> Export. It's been this way for a couple of versions now, there was some discussion about it on the forum a while back and a few people were testing it out.
Unfortunately it's hard to find a good balance. Some users write a lot of notes, some write none. Having a secondary page for them allows people who like to include a lot of detail to also print that.
There is further discussion on providing some more PDF formats, but it's a longer term project.
