Re: Import from excel

Reactivating an old thread, in case my issue helps others with the same problem.

I also have a bunch of dives in excel. I've never had luck getting them into macdive, but the new IOS functionality makes me want to get everything in and use it more, so I'm trying again.

I've tried exporting an existing dive several ways. I then slightly modify the dive, and re-import it. No luck.

I've tried UDCF. The export doesn't have max depth or duration in it.

I've tried CSV. The export looks good, but there doesn't seem to be any way to import the dive. When I drop the file on macdive, nothing happens.

I've tried XML. The export looks good. I change the date, depth and time, just to create new data. If I leave the <Identifier> field alone, the import says no new dives found. If I delete the field, the import says it finds 1 new dive, but the dive doesn't show up, I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

thanks.

XML is the way to do it. Dives do need an identifier, though, and it should be unique.

If it is not showing up send me the file and I'll take a look.

Thanks.

ah, excellent. Is it just a random unique string or does it have any data embedded in it, how do I create an identifier? I assume same length and pattern as the one from the existing dive.

thanks.

As long as it is unique to that dive, it doesn't really matter. It's just a way to stop duplicates. It's probably something that shouldn't even be in there, MacDive should figure out if it's unique in a smarter way.

But.. time.. other features.. :)
