New dive app with MacDive import — looking for test databases

Post by ventrilok77 »

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share something I've been quietly working on for a while: a new dive logbook app for the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad and macOS). With MacDive no longer under active development, I'm hoping this can fill that gap for the community.

A few highlights:
  • Direct MacDive import — the app can import your existing MacDive database as-is, straight from your Mac or phone. No manual export steps, no data loss.
  • Dive computer support — thanks to the excellent open-source libdivecomputer project, the app will support a wide range of dive computers right out of the box (full compatibility list on their site https://libdivecomputer.org/).
  • Tarting with Apple, expanding later — launching first on iPhone, iPad and macOS with a modern, clean interface. Android and Windows support planned for future releases..
Here are a few early screenshots to give you a feel for where things are headed: (dive log, dive detail, site detail — attach screenshots here)

What's still in progress:
The app is not yet in beta — I'm still working on a number of features including dive merging, photo management, and quite a bit more. I'm hoping to have something ready for beta testing in the coming weeks. I'll post updates here as things progress if there's interest.

The reason I'm posting today: I'd love your help with testing.
My own MacDive database only covers my personal dive history, which obviously can't exercise every possible combination of gear, dive computer, gas mixes, site types, and so on. If anyone would be willing to share their
MacDive database for testing purposes, I'd be extremely grateful.

I'm fully aware that a MacDive database can contain personal information — buddy names, emergency contacts, medical notes including things like blood type. Please only share if you're comfortable doing so. Sharing as-is is fine, but if you'd prefer to anonymise names and personal details first, that works equally well — I only really need the dive data itself.

Any database shared will be used solely for compatibility testing and will not be redistributed.
I'm also happy to hear any feedback or feature requests you might have! 😊

Feel free to reply here or send me a private message.

Thanks for building such a great community around diving data — this app wouldn't exist without MacDive laying the groundwork.

Good day to you ventrilok77!

Nice to hear you are working on a diving software package for the Apple devices. Are you intending that it will be open source or for sale in the future? Are you looking for any assistance on the project?

Have a great day and have fund diving (and coding)!

Hi Shadallark,

Thanks for the offer—it's great to see genuine interest.

To be clear on the business model: I'm leaning towards a one-time licence for core logbook features, with a subscription tier for more advanced stuff. That said, it's still being worked out. What I'm pretty keen on, though, is having a single licence that works across all platforms—no need to buy separately for each device.

For now, what would help most is databases for testing the import functionality and making sure I'm covering the features people actually use. Down the line, I'll definitely be looking for beta testers and other kinds of support from the community.

As for me—happy coding for now. I'm stuck on dry land at the moment recovering from surgery, but I'll be back in the water soon enough.

Cheers

Hello everyone,

There is also an application called BlueDive that was recently released, with a great UI, features, and native MacDive XML import (almost everything in dives/gear follows).

The application is for iPadOS/iOS, available for free on the App Store and at www.bluedive.app

I think it’s worth giving a try!

How can I help you? In what format would you like the MacDive database? XML Export or SQLite file?

Hello ComsubVie,

the .sqlite db is fine actually, I can share with you in a private message a link where to drop the file if it's too big.

Thanks a LOT ! 😊

Cheers
