Nick, something to consider... when creating a new equipment entry, include generic equipment pictures for each type of equipment in the list. IE, if you select regulator, a generic regulator picture would occupy the picture box but still allow you to replace the generic picture with a picture of your equipment.

This could be a little much but you could also include miniature manufacturer icons kind of like a Television network watermark.

There is already a generic picture there. I'll talk to my designer and see what he thinks about placeholders that are specific to type, though.
