I recently bought and am very happy with my Suunto Vyper Air. Having completed 25 dives with it, I have downloaded Suunto DM 4 for my Mac and download the dives from the Vyper to DM4. I regret to say that I am very disappointed with DM4, but the good news is that I have learned about MacDive.

Before purchasing MacDive, I would like to download the trial version to check it out. Is there a way to import some of my dives (I believe there is a limit of 5 dives) from DM4 or better yet, redownload from the Vyper?

My daughter is also a diver and uses a Cobra. Can we have two divers with two different computers on one MacDive program?

Yes, you can drag and drop a backup of your DM4 database on to MacDive and it will magically read all the dives for you. You can also download from the Vyper provided the dives still exist. If you've done enough, the old ones will have been overwritten. But since you can drag the DM4 database it shouldn't matter!

You can also drag and drop the XML files that DM4 will create for you, if you feel like doing them one at a time. The database tends to be quicker and easier, though.

Yup, of course. If you set up your profiles you can set the owner of your Vyper and your Cobra to you and your daughter respectively, and MacDive will auto-label all the dives for you when you download from the devices. This is covered in a little more detail in the help:

This is very helpful, thanks. In the end, I just redownloaded the dives from the Vyper Air...no problem. First and foremost, MacDive is an excellent programme and I am ready to purchase. My decision to purchase is based in part on the promptness of your reply to questions (ie support). So with that in mind, I have two questions:

1. Do I need an individual or family license for MacDive? We are two divers with two different dive computers, sharing one iMac and one iPad.

2. I will contact Suunto, but do you know how to delete or change the name that is associated with a particular dive computer? I bought a used Suunto Vyper and the previous owner has stored his name in the computer. I would obviously like to change this.

The idea is that the individual license is for one person, on their computer/laptop etc, and the family license is for families so that you and your kids/partners/parents can all share a license. Email me about this for clarification.

Suuntos old software (v3) lets you do this I believe. I have no idea if DM4 does, though. If you have a copy of the old Suunto Dive Manager you could do it with that, which supports the Vyper Air. I believe there may also be some third party utilities around which can do this, though I've no idea of their reliability.

MacDive itself doesn't as it never modifies a dive computer in any way, primarily so that it has no chance of causing issues!

If you have access to windows, I may have an old copy of SDM 3 floating around somewhere. It's been a while since I used it though, so I would have to take a look and see if I can find the option to edit your name on it.

For what it's worth, MacDive only reads the name the first time it reads a dive computer. After that, if you change the "Owner" in MacDive itself, that's what it will use. So changing the name on the device itself would only really help in case you lost it and someone then actually downloaded it and checked the name.

So if it was just for importing that you were concerned about, MacDive will take care of that.

In fact this is the case, so let me see how it goes the next time that I download a dive. if it doesn't work, I may bother you for a Windoze copy of DM3.

No worries. Just make sure you create a diver and change the owner of the now downloaded device, which will by default have "Suunto Diver" as its owner. Then you should never have to deal with it again!
