Suunto SDE imports lack pressure data

Post by fearsome »

Good day,

I am evaluating MacDive for my purposes. I am attempting to importing data from Suunto's DM5 by exporting dives in SDE format and importing them into MacDive. The import appears successful, but while MacDive shows the dive and dive profile, it does not appear to import the pressure data available within DM5.

Is this a limitation of the SDE format, the evaluation version of MacDive, or some bug?

Hi,

Using a Vyper the issue isn't that it's missing from MacDive, it's that the information doesn't exist to begin with. The correct beginning/end pressure should be there (view your gas in the gases tab or add Air Start/End to your table).

DM4/5 make this information up - notice it's a pretty even line. MacDive doesn't, as it wouldn't really mean anything. This is covered in a bunch of threads. It's a limitation of your device itself, not SDE or MacDive.

tl;dr: The Vyper doesn't record air pressure per-sample. Only the start/end pressures.

I am not sure I follow. The Vyper Air is air integrated, so obviously the device has access to pressure data. Are you saying that the device does not record this data or that it doesn't transfer it to DM?

While the pressure line chart in DM does tend to be fairly straight, it not a straight line. In dives where my computer has has problems staying in contact with the wireless pressure transmitters and only received intermittent data, the DM pressure chart does show the gaps in the pressure. So it is recording some pressure data while underwater.

Furthermore, I can unzip the SDE file to extract the XML. Within the XML, while all samples have a CYLPRESS of 0, each sample does have a value for PRESSURE, which appears to be recorded as 100ths of a BAR. Each sample also has a SACRATE which you appear not to be importing (I assume you try to compute this from the depth and pressure samples rather than import it).

So unless I am missing something, the Vyper Air does appear to record and export sampled pressure and SAC rate information.

As for the gas tab, I don't see the start/end pressure information in the chart below the main depth chart. But if I add the Air Start and Air End columns to the table, I do see them there. In the chart I only see a horizontal bar showing me either Air or EAN32.

It looks like you are grabbing the start/end pressure information from the CYLINDERSTARTPRESSURE and CYLINDERENDPRESSURE fields. Maybe you are expecting the pressure data to be in the samples CYLPRESS field, which is always zero. But it appears the pressure data is in the samples PRESSURE field.

My answer was based on your profile saying "Vyper" - I must have misread this yesterday. The Vyper Air indeed should have per-sample pressures. I'll try and find some old SDE files and see if I can spot what's going wrong.

Apologies for the confusion.

NP. I should have been clearer on my original message. Apologies. I can email you one of my SDEs if you wish.

Sure. I don't actually have any with me right now (I'm at my day job). I have some at home though.

How do I go about sending it? Email it to support@mac-dive.com?

I saw. I already sent you a new beta version that fixes the issue.

Thanks
