I have a mess. I have downloaded dives and there were numerous problems and I decided to highlight all the dives and use the "delete selected" menu item. It removed them. Then when I tried downloading the dives again, the program "found" the deleted dives and mixed them all up with the newly downloaded dives?????
How can I purge the old dive files?

That sounds kind of wrong. Try deleting them and then manually saving (this will force things behind the scenes to update). Could just be that things didn't quite save properly.
Dives aren't stored individually, all of your data is saved in one file - so I wouldn't recommend removing that if you have other gear or sites etc that you want to keep. The location is in the help (see how do I backup my data?) if you really want to remove it, but be warned you will lose all of it.
