and then the ...10-4_10-5_10-6 version
10 secs after trying to download I get 'failed to read header - error code-5'

You are installing the wrong USB driver. Check the devices page: http://www.mac-dive.com/devices.php
When you click Suunto, there is a link specifically for the Custom Idea cable. You want their USB driver, not the FTDI one. And actually, there are reports that the original SiLabs driver is more reliable so you may just want to jump straight to that, which can be found here:
