Not that it probably matters to this thread (sounds like the appropriate Mac drivers are installed), but just in case anyone encounters a situation where things work in the VM and not directly on the Mac I thought that I'd mention that the VM does not use the Mac divers. Rather, the native Windows drivers are used (Parallels or VMWare Fusion connect to the raw USB interface and provide the appropriate layer for the Windows driver to interact with). This is why you can connect USB devices with no Mac support to a Windows VM and have them work.

It depends on how you connect the USB interface to the VM. If you pass-through the raw USB interface, you are right. But with usb-serial adapters, you can also connect the virtual serial port to the VM, and in that case the host (e.g. Mac OS X) drivers are used.
