iPhone App Feedback

Firstly, great to see the development of this progressing at pace!

I've just downloaded Macdive 2.5 and synced my log to Dropbox. Also downloaded the iPhone app and synced the log from Dropbox.

First impressions look good, although haven't really had much chance to play.

I do have a problem when scrolling down the list of dive logs in that the app crashes before it gets to the bottom of the list. Assume this is a bug, although it would actually make more sense for the list to have the most recent logs at the top rather than scrolling all the way to the bottom (regardless of it crashing)

Is this on Tags, or Smart Logs?

I'm aware of a crash with certain Smart Logs - it's fixed already for the next update. Of course that has to go through the Apple review process, so it will be a few days before it's available.

If it's on Dives, it's likely something new. If that is the case then please drop me an email along with your MacDive data file (the help has some info on grabbing it out via iTunes File Sharing: http://www.mac-dive.com/help/ios_03_07_fileshare.php)

As for order, it's not done on date, they're done on name. Providing custom sort orders is on the todo list for a future update, we had to leave it out for now to actually get something released (you're gonna hear me say that a lot - turns out building an iPhone app from scratch is actually a bit of work..)

my first impressions:

* when syncing is enabled in the desktop app the data is provided to the dropbox via a new subfolder Dropbox/Apps/Macdive
* but the animated bar 'Initialising Cloud Sync' never stops (even not after 2 hours)
* a new dive no '0' without any data is added
* when having synced with the iOS App on iPad several dives are missing in both apps but the dive no 0 appears

   keep a copy of your data before trying to update and sync

Please email support for issues like this so we can debug it.

The initial "Initialising Cloud" step should usually be very fast, unless you have a LOT of data. New dives will not be created during the sync process, that sounds more like some bad data somewhere is getting created and syncing over. Did you create a new dive anywhere? Did you have one on your iPhone first?

And yes you should always back up your data regularly, update or not.

Yes, this was with the Smart Logs. When I'd first installed and synced nothing was showing in the Tags view, but after a further sync "All Dives" is displayed and I can scroll through that newest to oldest as I'd expected.

Having played a little more, it looks good for v1.0, and an improvement over the MacDive - DiveLog combo I was using (never did get cloud syncing working well with it). Will look forward to further updates and an iPad version would be great! Keep up the good work...

Cool. I will hopefully submit a new update to Apple tonight so we can get the Smart Log issue resolved as quickly as possible. Thankfully it's the only real crash reported so far (touch wood), which isn't bad for an app this size. I appreciate everyones patience. If you've used MacDive before then hopefully you're aware we've been putting out free updates for many years now and plan to do the same here.

Thanks! Plenty of stuff to come. Once any initial issues are out of the way there's a whole bunch of features we're planning to add over time. iPad is of course right up there.

Nick, this is awesome. Thanks so much. Really nice UI. This really makes me want to get more data into the log and spend a lot more time with the tools and stats you're giving us.

One feature request: it'd be nice to buffer maps somehow. I'm often offshore, out of cell coverage, and I hope the maps still work for sites.

And someday, bluebuddy support. I don't have any computers that will upload a profile, all my computers are that old. I need to buy something, and that seems like the lowest cost way to get into bluetooth data transfer to IOS.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback - glad you're enjoying it!

There's not too much I can immediately do for buffering maps. Thankfully the GPS tracker doesn't need coverage/maps. You can leave it recording, and assign those locations to your site, all without the map. This is covered in a bit more detail in the User Guide (see Location Tracking), but I'd hope it somewhat alleviates the issue? It means at least you can record things without worrying about it. No need to manually record a location at the site, just make sure you have the tracker running!

Obviously it doesn't help if you just wanted to view the map of where you are at the time :)

As for Bluebuddy, I've been meaning to add support for that. I have one here with a bunch of dives on it. I was planning on doing that, so I'll try and get it in for you sooner rather than later. Shouldn't be a big problem, though - we already support the DC Buddy.

Also, speaking of stats etc.. I spend far, far too much time adding/identifying critters..
