I have reinstalled the driver (to 2.3 from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm) ... again... and set the port to /dev/tty.usbserial-ST03HTF6 and it now works )

I am not sure what I have done differently but then that is the dark arts of serial ports....
