Downloading via DC Buddy is free, there are no in-app purchases.
Error 5 is generally a timeout from the DC Buddy, often caused by a bad connection or low battery. You can try force-quitting the app, leaving the DC Buddy for a while, then trying again later.
For anything further I would need to at least know what kind of device you are trying to download, and get you to run some diagnostics. For that, please email support with some detailed information (the type of device in particular is necessary to debug your issue).
