MacDive and Dropbox?

Post by Marcus Wendel »

Is there any support to use Dropbox with MacDive so the database is stored in the cloud as a backup?
Thanks.

If you scan around the forums, a few people are doing this with some degree of success. It is not officially supported just yet, but as long as you're careful not to edit on two computers at once I believe it works reasonably well.

I'd like to include proper cloud syncing, I've been promising it for a while but it's a very tricky choice between iCloud (and being forced onto the app store) and DropBox. Existing customers can't just be converted to the app store, so DropBox seems the better choice in that regard. But iCloud integrates a lot nicer. :)

Thanks for the fast answer.
In my case I would only use it as a backup, the editing would still only be done on one computer, but if it is not supported I am not sure that I want to take that risk.

Both iCloud and Dropbox are fine for me, the only issue is the financial aspects for us customers that a move to App Store.

Just using dropbox to backup should be fine as far as I'm aware.

Ok. If I understand the documentation at http://www.mac-dive.com/help/index.php? ... omputer%3F correctly it is the file MacDive.sqlite in /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/ that should be copied to Dropbox to have a backup of all the data on the dives?

Yes, but you should also copy the gear/site/certification images and such.

I'd recommend copying the whole

/Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/

folder if you want to be safe.

Hi I set up GoodSync to sync the data folder via a cloud which works like a charm and is available for free I think!

I know this thread is a month old, but just wanted to chime in. I've been using Dropbox with MacDive for quite a long time now, with no problems. My approach is to use symlinks. The real folder lives in Dropbox, and I create a symlink to it (I use SymbolicLinker to create it) which lives in the local Application Support folder. Works great, never had a problem.
