serial port not found

Post by debs »

hardware/software:
MacBook Air with only one USB port/OS X 10.6.3
Cobra Suunto dive computer
Suunto branded serial cable
Micro connectors, inc branded USB Serial adapter/driver installed that came on CD

Issue: 1) I have NO idea what the serial port name is and 2) when using the Mac-dive software, it tells me "no serial ports found"

Because the serial port is not found it will not connect

any ideas how I get this to work and find out the serial port name?

thanks - debs

You need to install the FTDI USB driver, linked from my website under devices.

I installed the driver, rebooted the laptop and restarted macDive but it still doesn't find a port during scan. There is no port name in the box, but when trying to import I get "Failed connecting to dive computer on serial port 'usbserial' (Error Code: -4)" which is a port name I tried earlier.

Is this an issue because I am using a USB-Serial coverter?

Try step 3 from these instructions: http://www.mac-dive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=407
The output from the "ls" command should give you the portname.

interesting... it is only recognizing bluetooth ports..
ls /dev/tty.* retured: /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem /dev/tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync

I tried using a hub just to see if that would make a difference, but no change. If you have other suggestions, I will try them, but I went ahead and ordered the USB version of the suunto cable and should get it in a couple of weeks

It seems I didn't read your first post very well, and didn't realize you were using a serial cable with a separate usb-serial converter. I checked the Micro connectors website, and they have converters base on different chipsets (Prolific PL2303, FTDI and Moschip MCS7820). Maybe you installed the wrong driver?

Maybe the device name associated with that converter doesn't start with /dev/tty.* ? Try "ls /dev/" and see if there shows up anything new after plugging the cable.

thanks :) I'll check when I return home and can resume testing next week (diving in honduras now). I've also ordered a USB version of the cable which should also show about the same time I get back. between the two, hopefully I can get it up and running.
