importing old Macdive csv file

Post by busybugs »

I have an old MacDive CSV file (2.2.6) that I am trying to import to version 2.8.5 but it doesn't seem to be recognizing any dives. Is there some kind of trick?
TIA

Nope. It's a horrible format that was never supported for import - sorry. It was only added to get data out in a simple format for someone to parse, I should really just remove it.

If you need to export/import data, you should use the XML format.

Is there a tutorial showing how to do this? I'm a newbie at this. It's about 70 dives so I don't really want to manually input them.

Export > Selected Dives as XML, then drag/drop it on to MacDive.

My question is where can I find out how to convert the old .csv file (exported from MacDive) to a MacDive .xml file so I can import those dives. It's rather frustrating that it cannot import the file that it made. I never anticipated such a problem.

I don't have a way to convert it, sorry.

Apologies for the inconvenience. The User Guide has always listed which formats can be imported, and if you're trying to make a backup, then of course that is best done with the actual data file. If you can, restoring the old data file would be a much better solution.

I have spent a chunk of time on this now. First, I was able to convert to .csv file to .xml. Then using an exported .xml file from the latest version of MacDive as a guide, I renamed all the fields to match. However, when I try to import this, I get an error message saying no new dives found. I suspect that there is now a simple error in the file that is causing it to be unreadable. Please advise.

You will need to email the file to support. It's a bit hard to suggest anything without seeing it.

Actually, having had another beer, my guess would be that you re-used the identifier from the XML you generated. In which case it own't find anything, that field needs to be unique.

Try changing it to something else, eg "csv-01", "csv-02", etc. Otherwise if it still doesn't work, email it to me and I'll take a look.
